reetings! I can't believe that I am first to do this!
In any case I believe that Religion is all too often used as an excuse to attempt to control others and thus ultimately it reduces the possibility for peace and mutual cooperation. I think we all need to be cautious when we think that we individually or as a select group have the only answer or understanding of what God (by whatever name) intends for creation. Pat
Many times religion is made the skapegoat for problems that we face in the modern world. We often think that religions so drastically counter each other, but when it gets right down to it, the similiarities between relgions are uncanny. Is relgion something that is used to cause division in this world? Of course. Does it have to be? No. There is more than enough common ground between religions (especially between Islam, Christianity and Judaism) to allow for religion itself to be used as a tool for unity and peace. Religion serves as a tool for division only when we let it--only when we allow the differences between religions to blind us from the common ground between them. When one opens one's mind to this, one discovers that there is much more common ground between us than there are differences.
This too is my first time using such a forum. Saw it mentioned in the PCMNY Kerux and am gratiful for the opportunity to connect with other peacekeepers in the States. Living in Cambodia, where Buddhism is a way of life here-I find that religion-in it's best sense can be a tool for bringing people together-to celebrate our common beliefs as well as our diversity. It is my belief that each of us has a piece of the truth (and the religion that one may choose to practice as well) and that only by learning and growing about others can I truly understand what God is all about. As a tool for peace, Pax Christi did well to choose Debbie Almontaser with its 2008 Peacemaker Award along with Martin Sheen. Nice to see recognition on the Commonweal blog. http://www.commonwealmagazine.org/blog/?p=1758#comment-20185 This is what Pax Christi is supposed to do as an organization which promotes peace in the world.
Greetings to you all! I'm a member of Hudson Valley (NY) Pax Christi, and it's the best thing I've done to express my solidarity with peacemakers. What we need now more than ever is awareness and education in order to promote respect between religions.
So glad to see that folks are writing into this blog. Sorry it's been rather dormant. I'm trying to learn more about this, myself, so I can keep it live and meaningful.
One of the most enriching things I do is participate with those of other faiths in the Metro New York Religious Campaign against Torture. I am so impressed with the deep faith, spirit, and commitment of my colleagues in this campaign. I feel such solidarity with them when someone opens a meeting with prayer, always sensitive to the inclusivity of all present. I believe God is very much with us all. This solidarity in faith is vital to our mission of a world at peace.
